When did we amend the first amendment to the constitution? Last time I read it, it still said, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging, the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Congress by a vote of 321 to 105 passed HR 1388 the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act on Monday. The bill will become known as the "GIVE Act." The bill includes language indicating young people will be forced to participate into mandatory [My Italics] national service programs. The bill also states that "service learning" will be a mandatory part of the youth curriculum. That doesn't sound much like "volunteerism" does it?
The bill forms what some are calling "Obama's Youth Brigade." Obama's plan is to require anyone receiving school loans and others to serve at least three months as part of the brigade. His goal is to create a civilian army of one million youth corps mandatory volunteers. It sounds like he is reinstating the draft without guns. It also sounds like something else, the youth corps of Germany in 1936.
Here is part of the HR1388 Bill's wording:
Section 125 (42 U.S.C. 12575) is amended to read as follows: PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES
''(7) Engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization."
It appears that Rep. McCarthy (D-4 NY) and her co-sponsors have not read the first-amendment of the constitution. If they have, do the words of Clark Gable to Vivian Leigh sound familiar, "Frankly, Scarlet [America] I don't give a damn."
However, it is voluntary, (?) ''any student who completes 100 hours of service in an approved summer of service position, as certified through a process determined by the Corporation through regulations consistent with section 138(f), shall be eligible for a summer of service educational award (Bonus) of not more than $500 (or, at the discretion of the Chief Executive Officer, not more than $1,000 in the case of a participant who is economically disadvantaged) from funds deposited in the National Service Trust and distributed by the Corporation as described in section 148."
Let's see, 100 hours service for $1,000 tax free that's more than Edward Liddy the Government appointed CEO of AIG is earning.
So once again it appears that Congress is living by the eleventh commandment, "When it comes to politics the first ten do not apply."
And, that is my opinion.
