CNET Writer Resigns . . . CBS At Issue Again (Media didn't like VHS or Beta, either.)
Alleges CBS editorial interference in Dish Network product review
"CBS reportedly prohibited CNET from publishing a glowing review of Dish’s Network Corp.’s 'Hopper with Sling' — a product that allows users to watch live and recorded television anywhere, and to skip television commercials.
Dish had presented the product at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, and CNET initially announced that it planned to award Dish with the “Best of CES” award. But when the awards were actually revealed, the Hopper review was absent from the list." . . . Read More
Another Reason Liberals Make Me Laugh
"Neither party has cornered the market on hypocrisy."- Bernard Goldberg
"Remember the suburban New York newspaper, the Journal News – the paper that printed the names and addresses of area residents with gun permits? Well, the Journal News got a lot of flak for their anti-gun stunt, a lot of phone calls and emails that the paper found threatening.
So what did the Journal News do in the face of so much criticism? It hired security guards to protect its offices and its employees. Security guards … with guns.
Get it? The journalists at the newspaper believe that guns are bad if they protect you … but they’re good if they protect the people at the Journal News – even though they don’t like guns." . . . Read More
Obama Tweets 8-Year-Old's Gun Control Plea To Rally Support
Obama loves optics, tweets picture of an 8-year-old's letter pleading for gun control
Dear President Obama, the letter reads. I think there should be some changes in the law with guns. It's a free country but I recommend there needs be a limit with guns. Please don't let people own machine guns or other powerful guns like that. I think there should be a good reason to get a gun. I think there should be a limit about how many guns a person can own. We should learn from what happened at Sandy Hook es. I feel really bad about what just happened. . . . Read More
Inconvenient Truths About Al Jazeera
Al Gore didn't want Glenn Beck to own Current TV. But Al Jazeera? That was just fine.
"Al Gore and his co-investors just sold liberal cable channel Current TV to Al Jazeera, the network bankrolled by the emir of Qatar. How much in carbon offsets does Mr. Gore need to balance his estimated $100 million from the sale to an oil sheik?
But there's a more serious issue here than hypocrisy. Current's owners could have simply said they sold to the highest bidder, with the emir paying an estimated $500 million for a network with viewership of only 22,000. Instead they glorified Al Jazeera.
Writing for himself and Mr. Gore, co-founder Joel Hyatt, a lawyer and Democratic fundraiser, explained: 'When considering the several suitors who were interested in acquiring Current, it became clear to us that Al Jazeera was founded with the same goals we had.' Among them: 'to give voice to those whose voices are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the important stories that no one else is telling.'" . . . Big Wind Meets An Ill Wind
Some believe the answer to our electric needs . . . wait for it . . . is not blowin’ in the wind.
"Four years ago, Shell Wind Energy, a unit of the oil company, looked for a suitable site for a wind farm on the Northern California coast. Its scouts found a large acreage — cattle pastures — high on the hills about six miles from the town of Ferndale. They secured permission from the rancher-owners to use the land and announced the project. All hell broke loose.
The local weekly in the tight-knit town was flooded with concerned letters to the editor: One of two narrow roads into the hill area carried all the daily traffic of a large hinterland; the other was largely dirt. They would be clogged for months with construction trucks. Wind turbine blades will kill thousands of birds. The constant noise of the turning blades will keep local ranch families awake. The wind farm will spoil the view and forever alter the bucolic nature of the land." . . . Read More
New Science Upsets Calculations On Sea Level Rise, Climate Change
"Ice sheet melt massively overestimated, satellites show."- The Register
"A new analysis of data from dedicated satellites shows that one of the main factors predicted to drive rising sea levels in future has been seriously overestimated, with major implications for climate talks currently underway in Doha.
The new methods involve filtering out noise from the data produced by the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) spacecraft, sent into orbit with the aim of finding out just how much ice is melting from the world's ice sheets and glaciers. Such water then runs off into the sea, providing one of the main potential drivers of sea level rise - which is itself perhaps the main reason to worry about climate change.
'GRACE data contain a lot of signals and a lot of noise. Our technique learns enough about the noise to effectively recover the signal, and at much finer spatial scales than was possible before,' explains professor Frederik Simons of Princeton uni. 'We can 'see through' the noise and recover the 'true' geophysical information contained in these data. We can now revisit GRACE data related to areas such as river basins and irrigation and soil moisture, not just ice sheets.'" . . . Read More
Minority Report Has Arrived: Maryland And Pennsylvania Using Computers To Predict Future Crimes
Professor says his software replaces that 'ad-hoc' decision making, and should identify eight future murderers out of 100.
"When police in Minority Report predicted who would commit crimes and stopped them before they did it, it was considered so futuristic, the film was set in 2054. Now, however, law enforcers in two American states are using crime-prediction software to predict which freed prisoners are most likely to commit murder, and supervising them accordingly.
Instead of relying on parole officers to decide how much supervision inmates will need on the outside by looking at their records, the new system uses a computer algorithm to decide for them." . . . Read More
Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa Starts War On Second Amendment
Following Obama's lead against the Constitution's Second Amendment, Villaraigosa threatened departments in the city’s bureaucracy.
"The Mayor warned them to divest holdings, such as city pensions, that they have invested in any gun companies that manufacture or sell assault weapons. He sent a letter to the Department of Water and Power, the Los Angeles City Employee Retirement System, and the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pensions." . . . Read More
Democratic Rep.: Debt-Ceiling Blank Check Is Like Emancipation Proclamation
Obama should be given the absolute power to raise the nation’s debt ceiling without congressional approval
“Sometimes when we’ve gotten great answers is when presidents have had enough authority to take some actions,” Davis told TheDC on Capitol Hill Friday. “I mean, remember that we just celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, and if Abraham Lincoln had not had the power, authority and the will to make that decision, we may have gone on with the war that was going to last several additional years and much longer, and thousands and thousands of people could have and would have, in all probability, lost their lives.” . . .
