Michael Hastings Sent Panicked Email Hours Before Car Crash

Journalist Michael Hastings wrote an email to his colleagues hours before he died last week in which he said his “close friends and associates” were being interviewed by the FBI and he was going to 'go off the radar for a bit.' The 33-year-old journalist said he was 'onto a big story,' according to KTLA that publishes a copy of the email that Hastings sent at around 1 p.m. Monday June 17. Hastings died at around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning in a fiery one-vehicle car crash. Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs, who knew Hastings from Afghanistan, supplied a copy of the email to the network.

'It alarmed me very much,' Biggs, who was blind-copied on the email, said. 'I just said it doesn’t seem like him. I don’t know, I just had this gut feeling and it just really bothered me.' The FBI has denied Hastings was under investigation. But WikiLeaks published a message on Twitter last week that said Hastings contacted the organization’s lawyers hours before he died, 'saying the FBI was investigating him.' . . . Read More

CIA Islam Convert, Director Brennan, Confirmed As Next Target By Reporter Michael Hastings

"This week Elise Jordan, wife of famed journalist Michael Hastings, who recently died under suspicious circumstances, corroborated this reporter's sources that CIA Director, John Brennan was Hastings next exposé project (CNN clip).

Last month a source provided San Diego 6 News with an alarming email hacked from super secret CIA contractor Stratfor’s President Fred Burton. The email (link here) was posted on WikiLeaks and alleged that then Obama counter-terrorism Czar Brennan, was in charge of the government's continued crackdown or witch-hunt on investigative journalists.

After providing the Stratfor email to the CIA for comment, the spymaster's spokesperson responded in lightning speed. Two emails were received; one acknowledging Hastings was working on a CIA story and the other said, “Without commenting on information disseminated by WikiLeaks, any suggestion that Director Brennan has ever attempted to infringe on constitutionally-protected press freedoms is offensive and baseless.”

The emails also prompted a phone from CIA media spokesman Todd Ebitz. He said they were saddened by Michael’s death and reiterated their position that they had a cordial working relationship with the investigative reporter.

On the other hand, Stratfor, specifically Fred Burton, remains nonresponsive.

The Michael Hastings Wreck–Video Evidence Only Deepens the Mystery

"Michael Krikorian, an essayist and former Los Angeles Times crime reporter, happened upon the scene a few hours after journalist Michael Hastings’s speeding car slammed into a palm tree and burst into a fireball.

Krikorian has seen his share of fatal car wrecks. But this one was different. As he put it, “This demands a closer examination.”

In accident-investigation parlance, it was a roadway departure–a non-intersection crash in which a vehicle leaves the traveled way for some reason.

But how and why did Hastings’s Mercedes depart the traveled way, and why was it traveling so perilously fast?

In a city where there seem to be as many car wrecks as cars, North Highland Avenue in L.A.’s Hancock Park neighborhood is not exactly Dead Man’s Curve. A fatal car accident there is rare.

Highland is a four-lane neighborhood artery as straight as a laser, with a narrow, grassy median lined with towering Washingtonia robusta palms. In the two miles between Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards, not a single traffic fatality was recorded on Highland from 2001 to 2009, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data. http://map.itoworld.com/road-casualties-usa#fullscreen

In the final moments of Michael Hastings’s life, the car he was operating accelerated to a treacherous speed before swerving off the pavement, mounting the median and slamming into one of the palms. There were no skid marks—no apparent attempt to brake before the collision.

Hastings, 33, covered the Iraq War as a young correspondent for Newsweek. But he made front-page news (and won the prestigious George Polk journalism prize) for his 2010 Rolling Stone magazine profile of “The Runaway General,” Stanley McChrystal, commander of NATO’s security force in Afghanistan. Hastings’s story portrayed the dismissive contempt with which McChrystal and his staff viewed President Obama and Vice President Biden. The general apologized, calling the profile “a mistake reflecting poor judgment.” But he was forced to resign.

Michael Hastings was carving out a journalism niche as a muckraker, and some see nefarious forces at work in his death.

What Happened to Michael Hastings?

"As erudite and informed as I pretend to be, the fact is that there is much that is important that I either miss, or fail to see any significance in. The death of investigative reporter Michael Hastings showed me that because my first reaction to the news flash was “who is Michael Hastings?”

Reading further into the story I discovered that he was the reporter who brought down General William McChrystal and that he was considered to be one of America’s premier investigative journalists. As I read that original story, the thought occurred to me that possibly Hastings’s death in an auto “accident” was not simply a case of reckless driving, but I initially dismissed that as merely the operation of my cynical mindset. Nevertheless, the thought nagged at the back of my consciousness and then I saw a story on http://whowhatwhy.com/ , my favorite investigative website, run by the renowned Russ Baker. For my own benefit and perhaps yours, I’ve done a little research into who Michael Hastings was and what he did that deserves attention. I explore the possibility that his death was no accident. I admit that I have no proof beyond speculation. Hopefully I can give you enough information to make your own judgments.

In a world where American Presidents openly arrogate to themselves the right to kill people deemed enemies of the United States, all things suddenly become possible. When the basic right of habeas corpus can be denied to American citizens, based upon unproven allegations of their being threats to this country, isn’t it possible for those with the power to detain and to eliminate individuals, to make decisions as to someone’s existence doing harm to this country?

Finally, doesn’t this unconstitutional expansion of powers give individuals with government connections the leeway to take revenge on those who expose them? While I’m not privy to knowledge of the actions of those in power and can claim no inside information, I certainly can speculate based on the experience of my lifetime. This then is my speculation about the death and life of Michael Hastings in the context of current life in these United States.

"Details uncovered by reporter, KimberlyDvorak, shed new light into the June 18 death of journalist Michael Hastings. Hastings’ friend and confidant SSgt. Joe Biggs disclosed a macabre twist in the award-winning journalist’s death in a suspicious single-car accident. According to SSgt. Biggs, 'Michael Hastings’ body was returned to Vermont in an urn.' He further alleged, 'Family members did not want Michael’s body cremated.'

This revelation provides another wrinkle in the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) handling of a case they labeled 'no foul play' only hours after the writer’s death.

Nevertheless LA County assistant corner, Ed Winter, said it took two days to identify the burned-beyond recognition body of Hastings. Officials also confirmed that an autopsy has been performed, but the cause of death is still pending. Unfortunately the family will have to wait for cause of death answers as LAPD media spokesperson Lieutenant Andrew Neiman indicated, 'It will take several weeks to get the toxicology results.'

Car Crash that Killed Rolling Stone Reporter Michael Hastings Still Being Investigated

A handful of news organizations have unearthed video of Hastings car speeding through a red light moments before the crash, as well as live footage of the crash scene before the L.A. Fire Department and Police Department arrived on the scene. That crash scene footage contains eyewitness accounts describing how the car was seen spinning out of control and bursting into a fully engulfed fire upon impact.

There has been speculation that a bomb was planted near the gas tank, as well as suggestions that perhaps the Mercedes’ on-board computer controls were hacked—causing the rapid acceleration and crash despite whatever Hastings might have been doing behind the wheel to counter that. There are also reports that Hastings’ body was cremated by the L.A. Coroner’s office against his surviving family’s wishes, implying that physiological evidence was purposely destroyed.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles Department of Coroner Captain John Kades said that his office has not closed its investigation because it is awaiting the results of a range of autopsy tests—which will take another four to six weeks to complete. Hastings’ body was delivered at his family’s request to a funeral home, he said, where it was subsequently cremated. This procedure for transferring remains was routine, he said.

'We did a complete autopsy,' Kades said, saying the Coroner’s first task was to identify the body, which it did from fingerprints. 'We still got a fingerprint ID; I can’t say how badly the body was burned.' . . .

'The LAPD did their own investigation of the cause of the crash,' Kades said, distinguishing between the LAPD traffic accident investigation and the medical examiner’s investigation. Details of Reporter Hastings' Death Remain Elusive

"It’s been nearly three weeks since Michael Hastings was killed in a fiery car accident in West Los Angeles. The award-winning journalist earned his stripes as a wartime reporter and captured fame with his 2010 Rolling Stone story that forced General Stanley McChrystal to resign as commander of the US forces in Afghanistan.

According to City News Service Hastings, 33, “was driving south on Highland Avenue when he apparently lost control of the compact (2013 Mercedes Benz CLK250) near Melrose Avenue and crashed into palm trees in the median about 4:20 a.m. Tuesday (June 18). The car's engine reportedly ended up about 200 feet away from the impact site.”

An eyewitness at the scene, Jose, employed at nearby business ALSCO Inc said, the car was traveling very fast and he heard a couple explosions shortly before the car crashed.

In fact, the explosion was so intense that it took the LA County assistant corner, Ed Winter, two days to identify the burned-beyond recognition body of Hastings. Officials confirm that an autopsy has been performed, but the cause of death is pending. LAPD media spokesperson Lieutenant Andrew Neiman said, “it will take several weeks to get the toxicology results.” By stark contrast, in Italy, ‘Sopranos’ star James Gandolfini’s family received the toxicology report within a few days.

Despite the intensity of the single car accident, an LAPD statement determined that there was “no foul play” involved. As news of the journalist’s death reached family and work colleagues another story emerged, one that would seemingly contradict the LAPD’s verdict. It quickly surfaced that Hastings reached out to Wikileaks attorney Jennifer Robinson just a few hours before his death claiming the FBI was investigating him.

In an atypical response the FBI Los Angeles-based bureau spokeswoman Laura Eimiller emailed media emphatically denying their agency was looking into Mr. Hastings background. Once the back and forth commenced, friends of Hastings posted the last frantic email they would receive from their colleague. It read:

'Subject: FBI Investigation, re: NSA -Hey (redacted names) — the Feds are interviewing my “close friends and associates.' Perhaps if the authorities arrive “BuzzFeed GQ,” er HQ, may be wise to immediately request legal counsel before any conversations or interviews about our news gathering practices or related journalism issues. Also: I’m onto a big story, and need to go off the rada[r] for a bit.

After learning about Hastings death, Ben Smith, editor in chief of BuzzFeed.com, released a statement saying the staff was 'shocked and devastated by the news that Michael Hastings is gone. Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about anything he covered from wars to politicians.'

One particular passage in Hastings book, “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan,” revealed that a former McChrystal staff member made a death threat. 'We'll hunt you down and kill you if we don't like what you write,' the unnamed staffer said. Hastings coolly retorted: 'Well, I get death threats like that about once a year, so no worries.'

He later wrote; 'I wasn't disturbed by the claim. Whenever I'd been reporting around groups of dudes whose job it was to kill people, one of them would usually mention that they were going to kill me.'" . . . Read More

Boston Brakes, No Skidmarks in the Sky

I had never heard of 'Boston Brakes' until two days ago. I had been on the Kevin Barrett radio show yesterday, discussing, among other things, the endless ways to gain control of an aircraft and plow it into a building, something I had been briefed on by my Air Force buddies.

There are a dozen ways to gain control of a plane, in fact, the more 'fly by wire' a plane is, the more ways to control it remotely. Now I am told the same thing works for cars, not exactly the same but close enough.

Nothing particularly clever is required, especially when the plane is capable of landing itself or, with a bit of hacking, making an inconvenient stop in the side of a building. I am told this game started with the CIA back in Boston, not with planes but cars. Car wrecks were mechanically staged using the 'Boston Brakes' method, not always fatal but always a good way of communicating to someone your displeasure. Sending a college age daughter into a light pole, reporting her speedometer was stuck at 200 mph and fudging her blood test to show she was “double drunk” has been done countless times.

It isn’t just that crash that makes it 'Boston Brakes' but the speedometer stuck at some outrageous speed and the blood alcohol level, always from a sample that is mysteriously misplaced later. Oh, and I almost forgot, no skidmarks, something accident investigators only see at suicides or murder. Remember, always no skidmarks.

The trail that led me to look into 'Boston Brakes' involved the suicide in 2003 of Dr. David Kelly, a suicide now ruled a murder. Kelly was believed to have killed himself because he had been attacked in the press by Prime Minister Tony Blair. Kelly, a prominent weapons scientist had claimed, as we all know is true today, that Tony Blair had falsified intelligence to force Britain into what Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has called 'the illegal invasion of Iraq.'

With evidence finally, years later, piling in showing that Kelly’s body had been moved and a suicide scene staged, pathologist records falsified and that Kelly was murdered with broad complicity by more than one government agency, things have started to take on a life of their own.

The assassination of Dr. David Kelly if prosecuted, and it is now under full criminal investigation, could lead to the highest levels of the British and American governments, the absolute highest. Kelly was that important and the secrets they thought they had silenced when he was murdered point to the heads of state of several countries, not just Britain and America but Israel, North Korea, South Africa and maybe a few more. This was a stupid and clumsy murder of a good and decent man. Selling nuclear weapons to North Korea isn’t a joke, not at least to Dr. David Kelly. This is what cost him his life.

The suicide is now a murder and the wheels of justice have begun to turn. When that happens, nobody can control the outcome, almost nobody anyway." . . . Read More

Once the video plays, note how the rear lights bloom greatly intensifies in the bottom scene when the brakes are activated and in this case not unlike the blooming of Hastings' rear car lights as it passed a store's CCTV camera in LA. Also watch at the very end in the same bottom scene as the truck drives away into the distance and then turns the corner as its brake lights are briefly hit again. Compare this short intense bloom to Hastings' rear lights from the LA CCTV camera as his car disappeared down the street, that bloom's intensity as strong as his car's headlights and looking as if Hastings' foot may have never came off the brake pedal. We will never know the truth. Reports said there were no skid marks while the engine and transmission had separated from the car, landing 100 feet in the opposite direction. Also it was reported this accident should have not created the hot fire that's seen in the video below. Then while watching the last video in this e-mail of Dr. Kathleen Fisher, DARPA Program Manager, explaining the ways a car's main operating functions can be easily taken over from its driver. While the police came to the conclusion there was no foul play, Dr. Fisher's comment cannot be ignored. Also remember as of this date and 59 days after the crash, the coroner's report cannot be found on the Web or reported as released to the media. That would help to put this to bed. Finally, Michael was driving a new Mercedes C250, one of the most well-built cars in the world, the main concern seeming to be that this kind of irresponsible driving had not been attributed to Michael Hastings's personality.
