"Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter made an appearance on CNN Friday, addressing local preparations for possible terrorist acts. Now another West Texas county, which sits on the border, is weighing in. "Liberty Counsel offered to defend the Allegheny County Council after it received a threatening email from the Freedom From Religion Foundation ('FFRF') opposing a proposed display of the National Motto “In God We Trust” in the County Council meeting room in Pennsylvania.
'The FFRF is in the business of harassing schools, county commissioners, and any official who will listen to their claims that public expressions of faith are unconstitutional, including the National Motto,' said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. School Board Member: Feds Should Worry About Marine Detained In Mexico, Not School Bake Sales
"The ground is crumbling under Michelle Obama’s signature initiative worse than a low-fat cookie. Numerous school districts across the country are moving swiftly to stop receiving reimbursements from the National School Lunch Program and in return, are giving themselves more freedom to decide lunch menus and bake sales at the local level.
The Duval County, Florida board is the latest to authorize its superintendent to authorize bake sales and sidestep the newly imposed rules championed by Michelle Obama. At a recent meeting, the board voted 6-1 to allow “junk food” in bake sales, the Florida Times-Union reports.
At least one board member believes the federal government has more important things to worry about. 'You see the federal government, in its great and never ending wisdom, decided that it was priority to tell Duval County parents what they could or couldn’t have at bake sales,' board member Jason Fischer said at the meeting." . . . You Need To Know! What Does A Quality Textbook Look Like?
"There’s an interesting new concern being voiced by Common Core leaders: 'What does a quality textbook look like?' Here’s a non-nuanced, concrete answer, especially for mathematics textbooks: 'It gets results and doesn’t chase kids out of math.' And, yes, such textbooks do exist. It’s not surprising that the issue of quality textbooks has come up with Common Core. After all, textbook publishing is a multi-billion dollar industry.
The federally-supported mathematics and English Core standards will drive 85% of a school’s curricula and 100% of the related assessments in about 40 states. The creation of new Core-aligned materials that prepare students for the Core-aligned assessments is already making a rich impact on publishing businesses, vendors, and peripheral activities (teacher training, consultants, etc.). So much has to be rewritten or at least republished with the words “Common Core Aligned” on the cover. Old materials must be thrown away. New materials have to be bought. Lots of profit is on the horizon.
The major problem for publishers, however, is actually in mathematics education. They must figure out how to get good, reliable, and verifiable results from American children who have become math phobic over the past 50 years. That means publishers need to listen to authors who have a proven success record and not to ideologically-driven math education leaders who have for years promoted fads with political correctness as the purpose of math education. It will be hard—and expensive—to cut the cord between publishers and embedded education 'leaders' if quality textbooks are to be created.
